Find out what that warning light actually means

A warning light tells you the car's computer has logged a problem. It does not tell you what the problem is — and that is where most drivers get stung, because a code reader plugged in at a parts shop gives you a number, not a diagnosis.

Common warning lights and what they mean

Engine management light (EML)

The most common and the most misunderstood. It can mean anything from a loose fuel cap or a tired sensor to a failing catalytic converter. Amber and steady usually means get it looked at soon. Flashing means stop driving and call us — a misfire in that state can destroy an expensive catalytic converter within minutes.

ABS light

Your anti-lock braking system has faulted. Normal braking usually still works, but the anti-lock function may not — and it is an MOT failure. Often a wheel speed sensor.

DPF light (diesels)

The diesel particulate filter is clogging up, typically on cars used for short, cold journeys. Caught early, a good run or a forced regeneration clears it. Left alone, you are looking at a very expensive filter replacement.

Airbag / SRS light

A fault in the restraint system, meaning the airbags may not deploy in a crash. It is also an automatic MOT failure. Worth dealing with promptly.

Battery / charging light

The battery is not charging properly — often the alternator or the drive belt. If this comes on while driving, you may have limited time before the car stops. Head somewhere safe.

A code is a clue, not an answer

Say the scanner reports a lean running condition. That single code could be a split intake hose, a failing sensor, a weak fuel pump or a vacuum leak. Simply replacing the part named in the code is guesswork, and it is why people end up buying three parts to fix one fault.

We use live data, component testing and experience to work out the actual cause, so you buy one part once. If your fault turns out to be carbon-related — rough idle, lost power, DPF and EGR trouble on a diesel — an engine carbon clean is often a far cheaper fix than replacing components.
