Signs it is time to get your brakes looked at:

• Squealing or grinding — many pads have a wear indicator designed to squeal. Grinding usually means the pads are gone and you are damaging the discs
• Longer stopping distances or a pedal that feels soft or spongy
• Vibration through the pedal when braking, often warped discs
• The car pulling to one side under braking
• Brake warning light on the dashboard

Check your tread

The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference. Below that you risk a £2,500 fine and three penalty points per tyre, plus an MOT failure.

A quick check: put a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread may be close to the limit and the tyre needs checking properly. Most safety experts recommend replacing at 3mm rather than waiting for 1.6mm, as wet braking performance falls away sharply below that.

Signs your alignment is out:

• Steering wheel off-centre when driving straight
• Car drifting or pulling to one side
• Uneven tyre wear, particularly on the inner or outer edge
• Steering feeling vague or unsettled

Alignment issues frequently show up as advisories at MOT time, so it is worth sorting before the test rather than after.
